Region 1 is typically a 7 - 8 game season, played 2 games a day. In some cases, teams will play two games on a Saturday and then another game the next day. The result is that Region 1 teams only play on 3 or 4 weekends during the spring. They may have 2 or 3 weeks between games and their season may be done before May 1.
I understand the rationale for this schedule. It cuts down on travelling and costs. But to me, it plays out more like a series of tournaments rather than like a league. And although I love watching my kids play in tournaments, they are tough on kids physically and they don't always allow teams to play their best.
EDP, NPL, NYPL all play one game a day and usually (not always) one game a weekend. The season in those leagues is beginning now and will end in early June. These leagues may require 4 or even 5 trips to away games that may not be local, so there can be a little travelling involved.
Purely from a soccer standpoint, I think that the "one game a week" league model is better.
Are parents becoming more accepting of the additional committment required by EDP, NPL and NYPL? Those leagues certainly aren't lacking for teams, so I would say yes. I would guess that, at some point, Region 1 will modify it's schedule format to come more in line with what these other leagues are doing.

It may try, but will be hard to for REG 1 to modify it's format. The teams are too demographically spread out to make for additional trips/time. $$ is already a strain most teams. EDP seems to have nearly-as-good competition, in a local environment. Instead of modifying, Reg1 may just fall off. Kind of what's happening with NERP and ENY Premier, on the boy's side, that is...

I could see Region 1 expanding and having North, Central and South divisions. Basically what EDP does now. Maybe have a playoff or mini-tournament at the end of the season with the top teams from each division. This would probably kill NERP and the Colonial League off, though.

That would make a lot of sense.
