Sunday, October 20th will be a very special day for a very special group of kids. That’s the day that members of the LIJSL TOPSoccer Program will take the field at Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University to play soccer prior to the New York Cosmos match against FC Edmonton.
The TOPSoccer program is for those children with mental and/or physical handicap conditions. TOPS stands for The Outreach Program for Soccer, a special program run by Long Island Junior Soccer League and its clubs that provide a safe and fun environment for children with disabilities, from severe auditory or visual impairment, and orthopedic handicaps, to behavior deviations or mental retardation. The goal is to provide soccer skill development and free play for kids who are unable to compete in a mainstream soccer program.
Started by Mike Ludin in 1978, the TOPS program has grown exponentially over the years. There are currently 25 member clubs on Long Island that provide TOPS program services to over 750 players, who range in age from 4 to 35 years old. There are several TOPS tournaments, events, and activities throughout the year, and several of our LIJSL TOPSoccer players also recently participated in the soccer competition at the Special Olympics.
Please come out and support these children! The Cosmos are offering discounted tickets to that day’s game for those who come out to support the TOPSoccer Program. For more information, contact the Cosmos ticket office at 855-71-COSMOS.
